Give Me Narratives

Give me narratives

No identity is stable in today’s wild, recombinant mix of cultures, blood and ideas. In this worldwide fluctuating context, everything that was once solid, runs the danger of melting away or falling apart. Narratives wrapped in strong, captivating stories are the ultimate antidote to this potential disintegration.

Stories embrace us. Stories give us meaning. They enlighten who we are. Stories stimulate to get the best out of ourselves. Stories let us land in our lives, our countries and our regions, our planet. Last but not least, stories make the brandscape that surrounds us come alive and involving.

Give Me Narratives

Here is a beautiful anecdote:

“Once upon a time a man out on his morning stroll came upon three bricklayers busy at work. The man was curious to know what they were building and asked the first bricklayer what he was doing. The bricklayer replied irritably that he was busy laying bricks. What did it look like? Since this really gave the man no further insight into what they were building, he went on to ask the next bricklayer. The bricklayer gave him a quick glance and answered that he was busy building a wall. The man moved on and reached the third bricklayer who was whistling merrily. He decided to ask one last time. The bricklayer stopped working, mopped his brow and replied proudly: “I’m building the town’s new cathedral”.”

This year we will Coolhunt on stories that uplift our lives. Narratives that help us to ‘land’ in who we are, both individually and collectively, and that make the brandscape come alive.

Stories can be earth moving. They can also be tender and fragile- in that case there is a link with Tender Human Pearls. Stories can also have a retro-orientation. Then they help us to nestle in the warm assurance of our pasts. Similarly, stories can have a future-orientation, in which they invite us to get excited about all the next big things that might manifest in our lives. The best stories however capture both the past and the future. For all this, we continue our quest for Cool Narratives.
