{"id":4084,"date":"2020-06-09T18:05:23","date_gmt":"2020-06-09T16:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scienceofthetime.com\/?p=4084"},"modified":"2021-09-05T16:02:56","modified_gmt":"2021-09-05T14:02:56","slug":"skin-ii-a-second-skin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scienceofthetime.com\/dlc\/2020\/06\/09\/skin-ii-a-second-skin\/","title":{"rendered":"SKIN II: A SECOND SKIN"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-text-color\" style=\"color:#000000\"><strong>What if we can make an interaction between the benefits of the human skin and the clothes we wear?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#000000\">Designer&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rosiebroadhead.com\/\"><strong>Rosie Broadhead<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;thought about this question and came up with the project Skin II.&nbsp;Broadhead is&nbsp;graduated from Central Saint Martins and is now a&nbsp;designer specializing in biomaterials in the fashion industry.&nbsp;\u2018Skin II\u2019 is made in collaboration with&nbsp;microbiologist Christopher Callewaert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHAT IT IS?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#000000\">\u2018<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2019\/07\/23\/rosie-broadhead-weaves-bacteria-into-clothing-fibres-to-create-a-second-skin\/\">Skin II<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 is a \u2018second skin\u2019 that looks like a leotard-like garment. Skin II incorporates live bacteria that reduces body odor, stimulate cell renewal and improve the immune system when activated by sweat. Probiotic bacteria are placed in the fabric where you sweat the most. But what if, instead of using supplements, simply the clothes you wear can make you healthier? When you wear \u2018Skin II\u2019 the good bacteria are being activated when they come in contact with the moisture on our skin, this allows them to dominate bad, less beneficial bacteria. Because the probiotic bacteria are placed strategically on the places where you would normally sweat, the results are very effective. So, Skin II is interesting because it gives us more \u2018good bacteria\u2019 what means a better immune system and&nbsp;stimulate cell renewal.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><span style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Besides the positive effect on \u2018Skin II\u2019 there is also a negative effect from the clothes we wear now a day. What you maybe don\u2019t know is that a lot of clothes have toxic chemicals in it. In&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/publication\/6889\/toxic-threads-the-big-fashion-stitch-up\/\"><span style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>a research of Greenpace<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">&nbsp;they tested 141 clothing items and in four of them they found&nbsp;high levels of toxic phthalates. In two of them they found cancer-causing amines. In addition, the presence of many other different types of potentially hazardous industrial chemicals were discovered across a number of the products tested. This was the original problem for Broadhead. She was concerned about the toxic chemicals that comes into our body\u2019s by materials.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><span style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Not only our clothes can be toxic for our body but also our cosmetics. Chemicals can&nbsp;<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/toxicfreefuture.org\/healthy-living\/healthy-homes\/cosmetics-and-personal-care-products\/\"><span style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">be absorbed by skin.<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">&nbsp;So, \u2018Skin II\u2019 is interesting because it brings us clothes that are healthier for our skin. It goes against the growing fast fashion. <\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default\"><p><span style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">&#8220;Our skin&#8217;s biome is shaped by our natural environment, and what we put on and next to our skin has a direct impact on our bodies&#8221;&nbsp;&#8220;Cosmetic products and fabric finishes on clothing can contain toxic chemicals which disrupt the diversity of bacteria living on our skin.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2019\/07\/23\/rosie-broadhead-weaves-bacteria-into-clothing-fibres-to-create-a-second-skin\/\"><span style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Rosie Broadhead<\/span><\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHY IT HAS FUTURE GROWTH POTENTIAL?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#000000\">This project is only a prototype from Broadhead and is not something that is on the market. The approach of Broadhead to give people clothes that are \u2018alive\u2019 through organic infused textiles gives us a lot of benefits for the future of fashion. Because&nbsp;Skin II\u2019 is \u2018alive\u2019 you need to care better for your clothes. This creates a deeper bond with your clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#000000\">Designing innovative textiles instead of making a new garment is now more important than ever.
