Sustainability is one of the challenges in which the hospitality industry faces lot of obstacles, this is because there is a dilemma between costumer satisfaction and environment impact of this action. Plastic is one of the biggest polluter of environment in our time and unfortunately hotels do produce lot of plastic waste no matter how much they strive for sustainability.
According to PlasticsEurope, 39.9% of total plastic demand in Europe is driven by the packaging sector – where the use of PET(short for Polyethylene Terephthalate) is very common. Water bottles, trays and domes holding fruits and salads, peanut butter containers and cleaning product bottles and are just a few examples of packaging made from PET plastic. Hotels need lot of plastic products such as water bottles, toiletries in guest rooms like shampoo bottles and toothbrushes, packaging and storage items in the kitchen, plastic glasses used near the pools and much more.
But what if hotels and restaurants can use plastics which really essential for their operations and it doesn’t impact the environment severely? What if the plastic used doesn’t require new plastic to be produced from petroleum products?
Bantam Material International is a company which is trying to address this issue through one of their product Prevented Ocean Plastic.
WHAT IT IS?
Prevented Ocean Plastic is recycled plastic collected from coastal areas at risk of ocean plastic pollution. This plastic is made from recycled plastic PET bottles (rPET) and produced according to European and North American quality standards.
WHY IT´S COOL?
- Touch point for the guests that the hotel apart from being Alma(a nourishing one) for the guests is also Alma for the environment.
- Provides a way to further promote sustainability in hotel for direct as well as indirect interaction for guest satisfaction.
- Innovative idea to reduce the negative impact on our environment.
- Inspires that sustainability and profitability can co-exist for the benefit of all stakeholders.
WHY IT HAS FUTURE GROWTH POTENTIAL?
Today every company is striving to make sustainability one of the core value of their work ethics. Hotels like Alma which has already taken steps for sustainability by using local ingredients in their food, using minimal plastics for decor and promoting green-space in their property can use this product as an addition to their effort to sustainability.
I believe each of us has a moral obligation to our future generations and life on this planet, we need to take the right steps to repair the damages and preserve the beauty of nature.

Is very important for the industry and all of us to understand how can we contribute to the fight against global warming! This is a very good iniciativa but we need the action of a high percentage of the hotels and restaurants to obtain a real impact. I hope this iniciativa continues growing!

I am myself on the way to try no use the plastic products much. For me, it is not easy and sometimes people stared at me and asked why I had to carry some stuff without a plastic bag? This sustainable material is amazing, I do hope the hospitality industry can use it as soon as possible. Thank you for your great information!
