Forget the Cock, Pass me a Mock!

  • September 24, 2024

WHAT IT IS?

I think we’ve all been there; woken up on a weekday after going out with colleagues and telling ourselves ‘I’ll only have 1’! Now it’s Wednesday morning, you’re hungover, old tacos on your counter that never made it to the fridge, and your head is pounding to the beat of your alarm clock telling you you should’ve been at work 43 minutes ago. Why do you keep doing this? To look cool? To fit a part? Sure they taste good, but the bite of the alcohol and the punch of the next day is never worth it. Sure mocktails are a thing, but they’re never as cool, as fresh, never have as much depth on the palette as a Negroni or a Last Word may have. I could never go a Taco Tuesday without my margarita…right?

WHY IT´S COOL?

  • Taste So many people flock to cocktails simply because of the taste. Let’s face it, mocktails have a bad rep. Too many places mix cranberry juice and soda water and call it a mocktail. But what if you added Ghia, a botanical apéritif? Or mixed it with Optimist, a smokey, fresh, and bright 0 alcohol mezcal replacement? Or stirred in Seedlip, the world’s first non alcoholic distilled spirit? As the founder, Ben Branson, said ‘it’s best not to compare—just think of it as a whole new world of sophisticated drinking’. Surely if you were handed a well balanced drink with zero consequences, you wouldn’t turn it down.
  • Price There’s something special about paying $10+ or even $18+ for a cocktail…NOT. Even though many non alcoholic alternatives use the same methods of distillation as their liquor-filled cousins, you’ll still see a price tag ranging from $8-$12. While some may argue even that is steep for no alcohol, with all the measuring, mixing, garnishing, and presentation that also goes into these new world drinks, you’ll find yourself understanding after the first round.
  • Presentation But I want something to post online! The beautiful thing is: you can’t tell a mocktail from a cocktail by just looking at it. Whether you don’t want to drink for personal, health, or dietary reasons, you can still join the fun and let your camera drink first! These are not your mom’s mocktails; these are chilled with monogrammed ice cubes, spruced up with sprigs of rosemary, topped with dirty cherries, and shaken, not stirred.

WHY IT HAS FUTURE GROWTH POTENTIAL?

People everywhere, young and old, are ditching alcohol for its lower calorie, zero punch, non hangover inducing, younger sister, and they have reasons to! In the past, you’d see people steering clear of alcohol for religious reasons or for sobriety, and that was basically it. Hollywood and the media glamourised drinking to the point where kids under 21 couldn’t wait, and sometimes didn’t wait, to turn of age. But once they got their first sip, what happened? They either realised they bought into the hype and that it wasn’t worth the damage to their bodies and wallets or they fell down a hole with drinking and found out it wasn’t worth it a few years later. Either way, we are moving past cocktails with fleeting joy that impair our judgment and can lead to serious after affects and are evolving to an era where we can still enjoy drinks with our friends that everybody can partake in, no matter their age, religion, nor fitness restraints, and that is just as intricate and cool. Cheers to a win win!

    How cool is this "Seed"?

Does it have future growth potential?

The topic is so actual and interesting, and the title is so effective! I am noting this trend in my job, and, as a sommelier, I am slightly worried about it. In any case, I think that the post, although I can’t get the touch point, is really well written!

As bartender and cocktail lover I love the fact that you dedicated this blog to the matter! I find your post really interesting. Surely, Non-alcoholic cocktails are a trend nowadays, nonetheless many of the world’s best bars do not value them as much as they should. What do you think about Low-ABV cocktails instead? can they be a new trend as the middle point between the two options?

Aster. Welcome. For a moment thought “‘hmm the rise of the mock – not really fresh and new.” And then you proved me very wrong. Ys, we know of the mock. but your angle – how to make it cool and more cool – is fresh and convincing. And your blog proves you are very much in the know! With lots of interesting angles, insights, facts. Love it. Thanks.CR

Hi Aster, when you think you have already read a lot about this topic, your article makes you think again! I totally believe this trend will be in the future more and more popular with time and it is only at its beginning, there are many angles to still discover. As the cocktail world is very creative, there are endless opportunities. Very interesting to read!

Hi Aster! so while I’m not a fan of the blog name—it’s a bit unappealing—the content is truly revolutionary! Reading it from the perspective of not only hospitality but as a mother, I really appreciate the valid points made about healthier choices for our kids. As younger generations increasingly prioritize health and wellness, this shift is so relevant. It’s refreshing to see venues embracing inclusivity, catering to those who want flavorful, sophisticated drinks without the alcoholic component. I never really considered how these options could impact family outings and gatherings. It opens up so many possibilities for creating enjoyable experiences for the youngest, while still feeling like a treat. I think the blog was well on point and offered such an interesting perspective that it really caught my eye as I read through it all.

I’m not into alcohol. Mocktails are actually getting a lot more creative these days—some of them have a ton of flavor and complexity, without the next-day regret! Plus, there are so many fresh, non-alcoholic pairings for things like Pina colada that taste just as good, if not better, than the usual cocktails.

    Good night, Aster!
I totally see where Sigrid is coming from regarding the title “Forget the Cock, Pass me a Mock!”—it’s not really my favorite either. However, I think you’ve come up with a fantastic and original idea! If I could suggest an alternative title, how about “Mocktails: The New Cool in Social Sipping”? It really captures the exciting shift in how people are enjoying drinks these days.
I completely agree that mocktails often get a bad rap for being less exciting, but they offer a wonderful, healthy option for those who want to enjoy a night out. The creativity in this space is truly limitless, and with the right ingredients and a skilled bartender, mocktails can be just as flavorful and sophisticated as traditional cocktails.
That said, I do have to admit that I miss the classic espresso martini—there’s just something about it that doesn’t quite hit the same without the alcohol! Until they can recreate that magic in a mocktail, I might have to hold off on those.

    Good morning Aster!
I like your title, I find it original and cool. In relation to the article, I must say that the topic of non alcoholic cocktails market is finding a good PRICING strategy. Is a good choice for youngers and healthier generation, but, how much is the cost of a Non Alcoholic cocktail? Is easiest to ask for a Kombucha and paying 5$ whose body impact is the same that any can found in an non alcoholic cocktail that costs 10$…
Discussing about it is “risky” and you did it fantastic! My congratulations!
