What if I told you that some of those are now possible? With Airbnb’s new line of Icons stays and experiences, you and friends can spend a night in Polly Pockets Compact – yes, her carry-on sized home – for just $89 a person. In the town of Littleton, Massachusetts, Airbnb has created the experience of a lifetime for children, and grownups who want to fuel their nostalgia: to be a Polly Pocket and step into her life.

WHY IT´S COOL?

  • Nostalgia We all have cherished memories as kids and love to be reminded of them, but this truly personifies nostalgia and makes it real and tangible. Now, that deep dream many of us had to be a Polly Pocket can finally come true. A silly dream, but a dream nonetheless!
  • Affordability When Airbnb Icons came out, many people brushed it off as something cool, but definitely outside their budget. Without even researching, even I had already told myself that I wouldn’t be able to afford these luxury stays, but Airbnb has truly made an effort to be inclusive and accessible for all to live their doll dreams, complete with Polly Pocket clothes and a vanity!
  • New Airbnb Icon is taking a concept that we’ve all dreamed of and really ran with it! Typically, you’d only see something like this in amusement parks; for example, Minnie and Mickey’s house in Disneyland Anaheim. But this is a twist: real furniture you can sleep in and eat on and accessories you can try on. And not just theoretically!

WHY IT HAS FUTURE GROWTH POTENTIAL?

Airbnb is continuing to pioneer new concepts in the hospitality realm with their Icons line, and not just for Polly Pocket. Disney’s Up house was recreated, X-Men’s X Mansion, Barbie’s Malibu Dreamhouse, and even Shrek’s Swamp. As the list continues to grow and word continues to spread, the dreams from our childhood will continue to spark until living in the world of our favourite dolls and action figures is no longer a dream, but a photographed memory we experienced that Airbnb fulfilled in our adult years. Oh, to be a 90s kid in 2024!

    I already knew about this initiative. In any case, it’s a very recent discovery, and I think it represents the apex of the experience economy. In the same period, I loved the one at Musée d’Oreay and the flying house from Up.

    Aster, thanks. Didn’t know this, so it was ‘wow’-enough. It fully shows how Airbnb strives to stay (or become) fresh, attractive and inspiring as a brand. Which is exactly the definition of Cool. Your writing shows pleasure in it, but, again, keep ‘smart & short’ in the back of your head, okay? Opening pic is very unsharp – I clicked on the link and there it shows much better (and also with more examples). I thank you for this enlightenment – including some of my criticism. Categorization is weak again, though. Please, work on that in your next blogs. Thanks. CR

    Hi Aster!!!
    The idea of experiencing childhood nostalgia through unique Airbnb stays inspired by popular animated characters is such a fresh take on. I can definitely see myself taking a girls’ weekend trip to the Polly pocket house!!! However, I appreciate the low prices that make it affordable for everyone, but I wonder if it would be a sustainable business model in the long term. Overall, I think it’s a brilliant way to engage guests on a personal level!
