Launched in 2017 by Belmond Hotels, the Andean Explorer is South America’s first luxury sleeper train, designed as a hotel on rails. Luxury trains have existed in Europe and Asia for decades, but what makes this one different is its location and storytelling: it crosses the high Andes, from Cusco to Arequipa, passing by Lake Titicaca and the Altiplano at over 4,000 meters above sea level.
This is not just a train journey. Guests sleep in a private suite cabin, they enjoy Peruvian fine dining with locally sourced ingredients, sip cocktails in the piano bar and gather in the open-air observation car while watching the Andes roll by. It’s hospitality in motion: a fusion of luxury, culture, and landscape. Beyond life on board, the journey includes guided excursions to Lake Titicaca’s floating Uros islands, visits to Inca ruins, local markets, and traditional villages, as well as stargazing in the Altiplano. Each stop becomes a curated cultural experience, extending the sense of wonder far beyond the train itself.

WHY IT´S COOL?
- Innovative Mobility Concept: The train itself is the hotel – the movement is part of the stay
- Special Location: Nowhere else can you sleep in a luxury suite while crossing the Andes by rail
- Unique Lifestyle Concept: Retro glamour of legendary trains meets contemporary Peruvian design and hospitality
- Storytelling Magnet: Guests live a cinematic travel narrative, from sunrise over Lake Titicaca to starlit nights on the Altiplano

WHY IT HAS FUTURE GROWTH POTENTIAL?
The Belmond Andean Explorer has strong future growth potential because it taps into the bucket-list factor, a hotel on rails through the Andes is instantly iconic and irresistible for travelers seeking once in a lifetime journeys. It fits seamlessly into the experience economy, where the true product isn’t transport but a narrative in motion, with landscapes becoming part of the hotel itself. It deep cultural identity positions Peru’s Andes as a moving stage of nature, cuisine and storytelling all woven into one unforgettable ride.
