Embedded: How the FREIgeist hotel makes history tangible

  • September 23, 2025
  • Sara Koethemann

WHAT IT IS?

Entering the FREIgeist hotel in the north of Göttingen, Germany is stepping into a space that breathes history designed in a way that makes you feel engaged and embedded, without the vibe ever getting stuffy. Being located at the former headquaters of the now worldwide operating technological company Sartorius, the hotel is decorated with original pieces from the 18th century Sartorius workshop, showcasing rustic watercanisters, beautifully crafted mechanical scales and stone mortars. The wooden working benches now serving as tables at the hotel restaurant. Guests can interact with these objects, connecting with the rich history of the place, and enjoying the combination of truly industrial design and the comfort of the 4* hotel.

WHY IT´S COOL?

  • Immersive experience: guests can connect to the space and hotel through the displayed objects making it unique
  • Making history visible: featuring the pieces from the Sartorius workshop makes the history of the space now occupied by the hotel transparent and creates a connection through time
  • Fun and educational: the instruments and containers displayed teach guests about how a mechanical workshop in the 18th century looked, making them more than mere design features. Children especially like to touch and interact with the objects, learning through play.
  • Substainability: Using the original workshop furniture also means avoiding unneccesary waste of ressources, instead giving these items a new purpose

WHY IT HAS FUTURE GROWTH POTENTIAL?

It is becoming more and more important for hotels to offer experiences to their guests, rather than simply being accomodations. Yet, this demand is not always easy to fulfill in ways, that are appealing to all customer demographics. Using the history of the place the hotel is located, celebrating it and inviting guests to discover it, is a lowkey, yet effective way to engage your guests, having them form lasting connections to your hotel.

What an interesting finding Sara. This interior style really gives the hotel charm and personality. Also, from the photos (nicely chosen) it look really warm and comfortable. A cool touch point.

    How cool is this "Seed"?

Does it have future growth potential?

Well-written, Sara! And a good and fresh Cool hunt finding, for sure. Beautiful telling pics! But, yes there is room for improvement, which is only natural at your first try. The link with Touch Point is so so – it might not be accidental that the terms does not occur in your good texts. (And ‘experience’ does.)’ Experience Economy is the topic of the second mater class. New Hotel Concepts will be the topic of the third one. Suggestion: ‘transport’ this blog under one of these trend fields. And hunt for a new one, precisely, for Touch Points! Thanks. Carl

This concept shows how history can be transformed into part of the guest experience. It’s not just decoration but an invitation to interact, learn and feel connected with the past. It also makes me think about identity …. when guests remember the story of a place, they remember the stay in a deeper way.
