WHAT IT IS?
Hidden among the vivid, graffiti-painted streets of Metelkova, Ljubljana’s alternative culture hub, is a structure with a unique story. Hostel Celica, which was once a military jail under the Austro-Hungarian Empire, has become one of Europe’s unique and innovative places to stay. Hostel Celica is a one-of-a-kind hostel located in a former nineteenth-century prison. The facility, originally designed to house military and political prisoners, was abandoned after Slovenia declared independence in 1991. Instead of being demolished, it was transformed by a visionary combination of artists, architects, and local activists. Celica reopened its heavy iron doors in 2003, this time as a celebration of freedom, art, and creativity, rather than as a place of punishment. Travelers from all over the world now come here seeking an experience rather than simply a bed. Each of the 20 former cells has been transformed by a different artist, altering once-bleak spaces into miniature works of art. The original doors and bars still stand, signifying the passage from isolation to community and giving a playful nod to the building’s past.

WHY IT´S COOL?
- Each room features a unique design, ranging from minimalist and meditative to bold and surreal, yet all are deeply creative. Experiencing a night in a living art gallery is what staying in Celica is like.
- Celica is also a cultural center. It hosts art exhibitions, poetry readings, live music, and seminars throughout the year. The on-site gallery and “Point of Peace” meditation space enhance the unique experience, while the basement houses solitary cells as a reminder of the past.
- Celica is located in the middle of Metelkova Mesto, Ljubljana’s countercultural quarter, with easy access to street art, underground music venues, and independent galleries. This makes it more than just a place to stay; it’s a portal to Ljubljana’s creative soul.
- Celica is also a leader in sustainable tourism. It is the world’s first hostel to receive the Travelife Gold sustainability certification, demonstrating its environmentally friendly practices and strong community involvement.

WHY IT HAS FUTURE GROWTH POTENTIAL?
While Hostel Celica is already an iconic destination, its potential remains vast. In numerous ways, it serves as a model for rethinking heritage spaces for the future. As global travel trends evolve toward more meaningful and story-driven experiences, Celica’s unique blend of history, art, and cultural involvement enables it to become Central Europe’s flagship cultural tourist destination. Beyond enticing passengers, the hostel might become a creative incubator, hosting artist residencies, international workshops, and collaborative initiatives that promote cross-cultural engagement. Strengthening connections with local artists, educational institutions, and cultural organizations might expand its function as a vibrant community hub, strengthening Ljubljana’s cultural environment and providing visitors with a more immersive experience. Furthermore, with its captivating story of transformation from confinement to creativity, Celica has the potential to become a worldwide-renowned brand in the creative tourism environment. By embracing its function as a cultural meeting point and increasing its artistic programming, Hostel Celica may continue to thrive not only as a place to stay but also as a living example of how spaces and societies can reinvent themselves.
