WHAT IT IS?
‘Adopta Un Abuelo’ is an app designed to connect people with lonely elderlies. Over two million elderly live by themselves in Spain. Three hundred sixty thousand of them live in retirement homes. Over sixty percent of them do not receive any visitors. This Spanish app allows its users, both young and old, to connect with each other, regardless of geographical location. To take part in this community, you must download the app, make a monetary donation (free for the elderly), match with lonely yet lovely old people, and enjoy activities with them. Possibilities abound: video calls, sending letters, residential visits, after-work beers and cooking together. Although the elderly are the obvious benefactors of this arrangement, it helps Millennials too. Millennials are reportedly the loneliest generation today, with reports showing 47% of young adults feeling lonely.
WHY IT’S COOL?
Interacting gives people a sense of purpose, while also providing the elderly with tasks to keep their minds sharp. The app gives Millennials and young adults a sense of purpose by contributing to a salient problem in society. Also, they might receive some words of wisdom from those who have lived much longer than them. The exchanges between the users will be beneficial for both parties.
WHY IT HAS FUTURE GROWTH POTENTIAL?
Loneliness is the harsh reality of modern life. Innovations, like vaccines, telemedicine and drone deliveries, have worked hard to make the Covid-19 pandemic bearable. But not much of attention has been directed towards the loneliness epidemic. The good thing is that technology can alleviate the problem. ‘Adopta Un Abuelo’ is a Cool example.
