WHAT IT IS?

This innovation, which is already launched in a Korean Supermarket, is all about eating healthy and preventing food waste.

Inside the wrapped packaging of the bananas, includes a pack where in total six bananas are placed alongside each other, based on ripeness. Thanks to this idea, consumers can avoid purchasing a bunch of bananas that are already too ripe or not ripe at all. Due to this packaging consumers are encouraged to eat one banana a day, starting with the most ripe banana and then working their way through the packaging of six. This can stimulate the daily recommended amount of fruit and can literally help you avoid a doctor’s visit.

WHY IT´S COOL?

  • Eating a fresh banana daily
  • Different concept and design
  • Simple solution to prevent food waste
  • Promoting healthy eating
  • Extending shelf-life

WHY IT HAS FUTURE GROWTH POTENTIAL?

Since food waste is becoming more problematic, this smart banana packaging could be a solution to prevent it. Consumers are buying the right amount of the product with the needed quality, because of those aspects there is no need to throw unripe or over ripe bananas away.

Unfortunately, the product’s packaging is still containing a lot of different materials, mostly plastic, which is also not famous due to ongoing climate issues. But looking forward, this problem can easily be solved by replacing it for a more sustainable material or otherwise stimulating recycling through for example an illustration on the packaging design.

Besides this negative aspect, the new banana packaging can stimulate eating fruit on a daily basis, extend shelf life for fruits and is a new concept comparing to other fruit packaging.
