“VANTA is assembling a broader ecosystem around: culture + dining + influence + experiences + international access.”
Take Away
Singapore’s private-club scene has just offered an intriguing lesson.
1880, once one of the city’s best-known members’ clubs, closed in 2025 after disappointing member visits and spending. VANTA is now preparing to open at the historic MacDonald House with a rather different proposition.
1880 made conversation central to its identity. VANTA pushes the idea further: culture, influence, curated encounters and the people in the room become the product.
Perhaps the next luxury status signal is not:
“I belong to an exclusive club.”
But:
“I belong somewhere interesting.”
The Sign

What Is It?
VANTA is a new invitation-only private members’ club being created across 16,000 square feet of Singapore’s historic MacDonald House on Orchard Road.
VANTA says it will host more than 100 member events annually and give members access to more than 120 partner clubs internationally. Michelin-starred chef Alvin Leung is providing the culinary direction.
But the physical club is not the most interesting part.
VANTA describes itself as a place where “visionaries, leaders & tastemakers” converge, and its own language repeatedly emphasizes culture, influence, connection and ideas.
That makes the club less like a luxury clubhouse and more like a curated social ecosystem.
The question is no longer simply:
Who is allowed through the door?
It becomes:
Who is worth putting in the same room?
Why Is It Cool?

Singapore is a city that handles a very traditional, status system.
Education.
Career.
Entrepreneurship.
Property.
Wealth.
International connections.
But once enough people have acquired the conventional markers of success, another problem appears:
How do you distinguish yourself from people who are already successful?
You need something less tangible.
Perhaps:
taste.
curiosity.
cultural range.
interesting friends.
interesting things to say.
These qualities are difficult to purchase directly.
And that is precisely what makes them attractive as status signals.
This gives VANTA’s proposition a deeper meaning.
A membership can buy access to a room.
But the quality of the room depends on who else is there.
So the real VANTA luxury is potentially not the building, the wine cellar or even the exclusivity.
It is the possibility of serendipity.
Rather than selling conversation alone (like 1880 focused on), VANTA is assembling a broader ecosystem around culture + dining + influence + experiences + international access. Its stated ambition is to make the club a place where ideas and unexpected encounters happen repeatedly.
Why Does It Have Future Growth Potential?

For decades, luxury helped people demonstrate what they owned.
Then it increasingly became about where they could go and whom they could access.
The next step could be:
what they can participate in—and what that participation says about them.
This becomes particularly relevant in an AI-saturated world.
Information is becoming extraordinarily easy to obtain.
You can ask AI almost anything.
But AI cannot give you the feeling that something unexpected happened because you were physically in the right room with the right people.
It cannot manufacture genuine serendipity.
VANTA’s experiment is therefore bigger than another private club opening in Singapore.
It is testing whether human connection itself can become a luxury product—and whether cultural and intellectual capital can become part of the new status economy.
Thinking Space
The old luxury question was:
“What do you have?”
The newer one became:
“Where can you get in?”
Perhaps the next one is:
“Who are you becoming by being there?”
VANTA has yet to answer that question.
But that is precisely why it is worth watching.
Mind you 1: VANTA is a proposition at this stage, not yet proof that the new model works.
Mind you 2: Is VANTA a kind of duplicate of SOHO House? Here are the differences: Soho House is fundamentally built around the creative class. Its own positioning is “a home for the world’s creatives”; its programming ranges across music, film, fashion, wellness, food, learning, and culture. VANTA is explicitly targeting “leaders, creators, and those shaping Singapore’s future”, with a Key Council of business and technology figures.
