“Don’t look for hotels that advertise diversity. Look for places where diversity has changed the way hospitality is organized.”

Take Away

In Sri Lanka, a new hotel is challenging traditional hospitality. Amba Yaalu Kandalama has taken a simple but radical approach to inclusive hospitality.

Every role is filled by a woman.

From engineering and housekeeping to reception and management, women run the entire hotel. Opened in January 2025, it is described as Sri Lanka’s first hotel of its kind.

However, the most interesting question is not simply why this hotel employs only women.

Instead, we should ask what happens when women shape the entire hospitality experience. How does this approach influence leadership, teamwork, and workplace culture?

The Sign

What Is It?

Amba Yaalu Kandalama is located beside Kandalama Lake in Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle.

Its unique concept goes beyond a women-only guest experience. Instead, it creates a women-led hospitality environment, where women manage every part of the hotel’s operations.

Women work across all departments, including engineering, a field traditionally dominated by men in the hospitality industry. In addition, several team members are stepping into leadership roles for the first time.

As a result, the hotel represents more than another female leadership initiative.

It offers a real-world example of how greater representation can change an organisation from within. It also raises important questions about equality, opportunity, and the future of hospitality management.

Why Is It Cool?

Amba Yaalu Kandalama challenges the usual conversation about diversity in hospitality.

Traditionally, many organisations ask:

How can we get more women into leadership positions?

Amba Yaalu invites us to ask a different question:

What happens when women do not simply join an existing system, but help build it together?

This shift makes the hotel particularly interesting. Rather than focusing only on representation, it explores how women can shape workplace culture, decision-making, and everyday operations.

Furthermore, this approach encourages the hospitality industry to rethink traditional leadership models. It opens the door to new ideas about collaboration, responsibility, and inclusive management.

That is what makes this women-led hotel worth watching.

Why Does It Have Future Growth Potential?

The future of hospitality depends on people. Yet, an industry built on diverse cultures, skills, and experiences has often relied on narrow leadership models.

Today, inclusive leadership is gaining attention as organisations look for ways to improve employee belonging and retention.

Research on inclusive workplaces highlights two important experiences: feeling that you belong and feeling that your individual identity is valued. Together, these experiences can help employees thrive at work.

For this reason, female leadership in hospitality is about more than increasing the number of women in senior positions.

It is also about creating workplaces where people feel respected, supported, and able to contribute their ideas.

Amba Yaalu Kandalama offers an interesting perspective on this challenge. By placing women across the entire hotel operation, it invites the industry to consider how leadership structures influence everyday working life.

The key question is whether this model can inspire other hotels to rethink how they recruit, develop, and empower their teams.
