“From owning the luxury object to: owning a trace, story or interpretation of the experience. That is particularly relevant to younger collectors.”
“From luxury as an object that proves status to luxury as a sensory experience that becomes personally meaningful, interpretable and culturally collectible.”
Take Away
Christelle Boulé puts drops of Maison Francis Kurkdjian perfume on photographic paper and develops the resulting marks into abstract prints. In the Paris boutique, a scent that normally vanishes can be seen, compared, and collected.
The wow is a physical trace of something deliberately invisible — and a glimpse of luxury moving from possession toward personal sensory meaning. Name of the exhibition: Expanded Drops.
The Sign

What Is It?
“Expanded Drops” is Christelle Boulé’s collaboration with Francis Kurkdjian. She places a few drops of fragrance on silver gelatin photographic paper, then uses drying, light, and developing solutions to reveal an abstract image.
The series has appeared in several settings since 2019. LVMH says eight selected fragrance portraits were offered as signed limited editions.
Why Is It Cool?

A few drops of scent become an image that remains after the odor has gone. Each print invites viewers to imagine what it might smell like, then discover how far that mental image is from their own nose.
The emerging luxury mentality here is not simply “more experiential luxury”; it is the desire to make an experience personally interpretable — to leave with a trace that means something to you.
Why Does It Have Future Growth Potential?

Younger collectors who do not keep fashion, art, and beauty in separate boxes. An early adopter could be a collector of experimental photography. A perfume enthusiast seeking a piece tied to a favorite scent. A visitor can simply compare an image with a smell.
The deeper signal is a movement from luxury as a prestigious thing to luxury as a personally authored encounter: something experienced, interpreted and perhaps collected afterwards.
Trend Summary Insight
The luxury opportunity is to create objects that are not merely scarce, but carry a trace of an experience, a process, and a personal interpretation. When the process is visible and access is open, cultural value can outlast a product launch while giving collectors something more than a campaign image
