THE PALAZZO LOBBY: LET ROBOTIC FLOWERS MAKE GUESTS WAIT FOR THE HOUR

“The new luxury of arrival may not be speed. It may be having a reason to stay.”

Take Away

In the lobby of The Palazzo in Las Vegas, 27 suspended, flower-like sculptures slowly open and close throughout the day. Once every hour, they perform a coordinated sequence with music.

The installation offers more than a striking visual display. It gives guests a reason to pause. Instead of moving people through the lobby as quickly as possible, the space invites them to stay for a moment.

The Sign

What Is It?

Shy Society Palazzo opened at The Venetian Resort in September 2026. Amsterdam-based artists Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta of Studio DRIFT created the installation. It includes nine Shylight sculptures and 18 Meadow elements. Together, these 27 suspended forms hang above guests in the central lobby.

The sculptures take inspiration from nyctinasty. This is the natural movement that causes some flowers to open and close. Their lights and movements change throughout the day. Once an hour, they perform a coordinated sequence with music linked by the artists to breath, heartbeat, and bodily rhythm.

The installation follows a programmed sequence. There is no evidence that it detects individual guests or responds to their emotions. Its effect is still powerful. The movement gives the lobby a rhythm that guests can notice.

As a result, the lobby becomes more than a passageway. Guests can encounter a small event that happens again and again.

Why Is It Cool?

Luxury hotels often focus on making every step quick and effortless. Staff recognise guests, luggage is handled, and check-in aims to reduce waiting. The Palazzo installation offers a different experience. For a moment, it makes waiting worthwhile.

Guests do not need instructions to take part. A traveller may stop to watch the hourly performance. A family may look up together. Two strangers may realise they are enjoying the same moment. This creates a shared experience without requiring a formal activity.

The installation also balances individual movement with a sense of community. Each Shylight sculpture has its own movement, while the Meadow elements create a wider group rhythm. This reflects a key challenge in hospitality: guests want personal attention, but they also want to feel part of a lively place.

The lesson is not that every hotel needs robotic flowers. Instead, the installation shows how thoughtful design can influence behaviour without giving orders. A well-designed space invites people to take part. Staff still shape the experience. They can make the moment welcoming, help guests find a good view, or let people in a hurry pass by.

Why Does It Have Future Growth Potential?

Luxury hotels increasingly compete through memorable experiences, not just amenities. Travellers see beautiful hotel images every day. A photograph can show a building’s design, colours, and scale. However, it cannot fully capture an event that unfolds over time.

This creates an opportunity for time-based luxury. Hotels can design small rituals that reward attention. An installation might move at a set time. A courtyard might change as the light shifts. A dining experience might follow a natural cycle, or a cultural performance might bring guests together.

These moments can also support better service. Staff can learn when an experience takes place and help guests enjoy it in a way that suits them. They might point it out to interested visitors, help families find a good viewing spot, or avoid delaying guests who need to leave. The artwork creates the occasion. The hotel’s service determines whether it feels human and inclusive.

There are limits to this model. The Palazzo has a large resort lobby and the resources to commission a major installation. Smaller hotels may not be able to recreate it on the same scale. Repeated performances could also become background decoration. Still, other hotels can apply the central principle without copying the technology: design public spaces around small, memorable moments that invite people to pause.
